Special Programs Created to Care for Those Pets With Specific Needs

Deaf Dalmatian Care
Dal Rescue assists the hearing impaired Dals whom often are not impairment at all.  Deafness is a condition not a hindrance for most of the breed.  Every one in 10 Dal pups are born deaf and we found that over the years with irresponsible breeding, the rate increases.  Basically, just a little extra attention to the needs of the deaf Dal and some creative hand/sign language is sufficient.  By osmosis, these deaf Dals learn just as quickly as the hearing ones and are sometimes even more attentive to their surroundings as they rely heavily on visuals since they do not hear.  We help them acclimate themselves to different types of environments and socialize them a lot.  Education for the prospective adoptive family is very key.  Once education and awareness has taken place, most families will not hesitate to adopt, especially if they have hearing pets at home.  There are many resources available at the click of a finger via the internet and printed materials we provide.  Finding a good support system is advisable and that's where this program can be very beneficial.  Correspondence and guidance is vital after adoption.

Care For Life/Extended Care
While we are an organization with a no-kill policy, this program was developed to care for those who will live their lives out within the Dal Rescue/Pets At Risk blanket.  Many of these pets are senior, suffer from illnesses and conditions which sometime can be debilitating.  Quality of life is essential to these once companions who lived in the only home they ever knew.  Foster care can provide a substitute family for these pets longing to once again give loyal companionship.

Intensive Care
Many of the pets we take into rescue have either been beaten, hit by a car or sometimes have long lasting emotional scars.  Many of these pets can have a future in a forever home, but face a long expensive road to get there.  Diagnostics and rehabilitation consume most of the medical budget.  Heartworms are common here in Florida and 6 out of 10 rescues suffer from heartworms.  Treatment is costly and lengthy and can have side effects, which require direct veterinarian supervision and monitoring.  We provide Orthopedic care when necessary for those injured or fractured.

Puppymill Recovery
With this breed we so much over breeding, inbreeding and just plain irresponsible breeding.  Most puppies that are products of the former are in bad health and most often never get "sold" or even qualify for a health certificate.  As Dalmatian Rescue has seen over many years, this program is vital to helping make these once unmarketable pets adoptable.  This process usually consumes a large part our medical budget.  Dal Rescue also seeks out special needs foster care for these little critters until their health and emotional problems can be resolved.

Pets At Risk Rescue
This organization is a DBA of Dal Rescue born literally out of necessity for all the other non-breeds and specific breeds that need our help.  When a Dalmatian is running at large or abandoned with a pet of another breed, it cannot be turned away.  We try through Pets At Risk Rescue to filter those specific breeds to their particular rescue group, but just like us, they are often full to capacity.  With shelters as an only alternative, we take the abandoned in and care for them under the same blanket as Dal Rescue.  We utilize our Petfinder site to help get these pets much needed exposure to potential adopted families since we are mostly known for Dalmatian Rescue.  Our Petfinder listing gives these wonderful pets an equal opportunity at finding a forever home.  Please check them out at www.petsatrisk.petfinder.org.
